アナウンスグループの大先輩の水庭進さんは盛んに暗唱を勧めていた。短いスピーチなどを丸暗記し、十分に解釈した後で発表することを言う。
僕自身は特に勧められた事はないが、アナウンスグループに新しく入ってきた若い人たちには勧めていたように記憶している。
水庭さんが最も好みだったのは、アメリカ南北戦争の激戦地でのリンカーン大統領のゲティスバーグ演説である。
実は僕自身もこの演説を暗唱したことがある。移民ビザでアメリカに入国したのが1958年、数年後、マサチューセッツ州レミンスター市の中学校に在籍していたが、まだまだ言葉もできずすべての科目が英語で授業される中苦闘していた。
アメリカ史の授業ではまさにこのリンカーンのゲティスバーグ演説の暗唱が課題として課せられた。当時このスピーチは言葉も難しくてなかなか暗記できず、何度もトライした後ようやくパスが取れたのを思い出す。
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
いくつか難しい言葉が並んでいるが、例えば冒頭にあるscoreと言う言葉は普通のscore とは違うようだが一体どう言う意味なんだろう。この場合のscoreは20を意味する言葉なのだそうで語源は「20を示す刻み目、昔, 羊などを数えるときに20頭ごとに棒に刻み目をいれた」と英和辞典にある。だからfour score とは4 × 20で80、それにプラス7で結局87年前と言うことになる。1863年− 87年=1776年、アメリカ独立宣言が発布された年だ。
「87年前、われわれの父祖たちは、自由の精神にはぐくまれ、人はみな平等に創られているという信条にささげられた新しい国家を、この大陸に誕生させた。」
翻訳は87年前と始まるが、甚だ味気ない言い回しになる。リンカーンのスピーチのゴロの良さは無い。元の英語を鑑賞しながらゆっくり暗記するのが良いと思う。
全文を移し込むが、意味のほうはウィキペディアを見ればわかるし、さらに読みのモデルが欲しければYouTubeを見ればいくつかの良いサンプルが載っている。
しかし、できることなら自分の読み方で読んでみるのが良いと思う。

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that the nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
