前回リンカーンのゲティスバーグ演説の暗唱が僕の職場の大先輩の水庭さんのすすめる暗唱のテキストだと言う話をしたが、確かに暗唱は力になる。思い出話になるが、前回もお話ししたマサチュウセッツ州、レミンスター市の中学校では国語（つまり英語）の時間に暗唱をさせられたのを覚えている。アメリカは日本の逆で、言葉がある意味で全ての国だ。自分の言葉で語るスピーチ（演説）が一番かも知れないが、暗唱は練習にはなる。
中学といってもさすがアメリカ。当時は教科書は学校がタダで貸し出してくれる立派なものだった。装丁も立派で少なくとも10年は持ちそうだった。英語の教科書にはシェイクスピアの作品がいくつか載っていた。
まずジュリアスシーザー、ロメオとジュリエット、ベニスの商人、ハムレツトなどなど。
ハムレットのセリフはクラスの前で暗唱させられたことがあったが、比較的うまくいったので、その後みんなの僕に対する態度が少し変わったような（もちろん良い方に）気がした。しかしこれは結構長かった。意味もわからないのによく暗記したものだと思う。
To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And by opposing end them. To die—to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks

Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action.
教科書にはさらにジュリアスシーザーの腹心の部下マークアントニーのシーザーの亡骸の前の一世一代の名演説も載っている。演説はこのように始まる。
Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Caesar.
リンカーンのゲティスバーグ演説のように簡潔なスピーチは見つからない。しかし、シェイクスピアは暗唱にはなかなか良い。
